I joined Wachovia in Winston-Salem in June 1987, and completed the Corporate Management Associate training program. Following completion I was assigned to the western region in Asheville where I was a corporate Loan Administration officer reporting to Lee Creede. Lee was a wonderful mentor, boss and teacher. After approximately one and a half years I was assigned to General Loan Administration in Winston-Salem, reporting to Bob Alphin. In retrospect this was an amazing opportunity for a then 24 year old. My experiences with Bob, his team and the Wachovia culture in general have served me well my entire career.
As the years have gone by I often reflect on my early days at Wachovia. I am convinced John Medlin had it right that "soundness, profitability and growth, in that order" is the proper way to run a bank.
I left Wachovia in the summer of 1990 to return to my home state of Virginia. I joined Bank of America (NationsBank) and stayed for a 17 year career that involved many moves and many different responsibilities. I joined Regions Financial in 2008 and today am responsible for Business Services which are our wholesale banking lines of business.
To John Medlin, Lee Creede, Bob Alphin and so many other Wachovians who defined me as a banker, thank you.
