IN MEMORY

Jack Tischler

 Dec. 21, 1931 - Jul. 24, 2012

In summing up his life, Jack Tischler once said that he had "sufficient deliberation and perseverance to overcome any tendencies toward impatience or impulsiveness." Coupled with an abundance of creative talent, that deliberate, yet calm demeanor earned him a wealth of lifetime friends, a successful career, and a devoted family until he met his last challenge at age 80, an obstinate melanoma cancer. Surrounded by his loving family, Jack passed away at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem on Tuesday, July 24, 2012.

A retired senior vice president for marketing for the old Wachovia bank, Jack lived in Winston-Salem since he first joined the bank in 1972. For many years, he served on various community service boards of directors, including The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. His friends cherished him as one who loved fine wines, good cigars, and stimulating conversations. He also had a passion for music, military history, and his get-away home in the Virginia mountains.

The son of the late Ludwig and Mary Tischler, Jack was born in Royal Oak, MI where he was a three year letter-man in swimming at Royal Oak High School. In 1955, he earned a journalism degree at the University of Detroit where he helped pay his way through school by working as a news reporter and sports editor for suburban newspapers and as a radio announcer. Jack served in the U.S. Army as an announcer and deejay for Armed Forces Radio in Korea. After the military, he worked ten years for the Campbell-Ewald advertising agency in Detroit managing accounts such as the Florida Citrus industry, Florists Telegraphy Delivery Association, and several divisions of General Motors. Before coming south to join Wachovia, he worked several years as Director of Advertising for the commercial products division of North American Rockwell in Pittsburgh. In Winston-Salem's West End, Jack was co-owner of historic row houses which he managed until his recent illness.

Jack is survived by his wife of 25 years, Katherine Epley Tischler; children: John Tischler, Greenville, NC; Tina (Mark) Pardue, Darien, CT; Matt (Barbara) Tischler, Advance, NC, and stepdaughter Blythe (Joe) Denton, Silver Spring, MD; grandchildren Jack Pardue, Charlie Pardue and Elizabeth Denton. In addition, he is survived by two brothers: Ludwig Tischler, Jr, Clarkston, MI, and William Tischler, Beverly Hills, MI. Jack donated his body to the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. A memorial to celebrate his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Jack's favorite charities: Big Oak Ranch, P. O. Box 507, Springville, AL 35146 or The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, 3800 Fettler Park Drive, Dumfries, VA 22025.
