
Kenneth Royster Smith, Jr. of Charlotte died Feb. 21 surrounded by family. He was born in Raleigh on Oct. 31, 1932, the son of the late Gladys Sims Smith and Kenneth Royster Smith.
Ken was educated in the Raleigh public schools, graduating from Needham Broughton High School in 1950. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a BS degree in 1954 and a master's degree in 1957, both in business administration. He was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity and the Gorgon's Head Lodge. Upon graduation in 1954, he was commissioned into the US Naval Reserve and served on active duty from 1954 to 1956.
He joined Wachovia Bank and Trust Co. in 1957 and spent his working career with Wachovia in Winston-Salem and Charlotte. Ken had various responsibilities in corporate banking, retiring in 1996 as a senior vice president. He was a past president of the Young Bankers Division of the NC Bankers Association and also served on the executive committee of the NC Bankers Association.
Ken was active in Charlotte civic affairs. He served as past president of the Charlotte Nature Museum and as an officer and board member of the United Arts Council, Junior Achievement of Charlotte, Mecklenburg Chapter of the American Heart Association, and the UNC Athletic Association (Charlotte chapter) and participated in other fund-raising and civic committees.
Ken was an active member of Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church. Previously, he was a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church, where he had served on the Vestry and in various other capacities.
He was a member of Charlotte Country Club and enjoyed playing golf with the RODS group for more than 40 years.
Ken is survived by his wife of 53 years, Anne Marshall Smith. He is also survived by sons Allen C. Smith (Debbie), J. Marshall Smith (Liza), and Kenneth R. Smith III (Bridget) and grandchildren Cole, Tucker, Marshall, Baker, Anne Gordon, Robert, and Kenny. He was predeceased by infant son John Gordon Smith.
The funeral will be at 2 pm on Thursday, Feb. 25, at Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church, 2929 Selwyn Ave. Visitation will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church and Charlotte Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 33000, Charlotte NC 28233.
