James Alvin "Jim" Tewes, 81, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Born on May 28, 1944, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jim was the beloved son of Alvin Albert Tewes and Mary Agnes Cheplak Tewes. A gifted student with a strong work ethic, he graduated magna cum laude from Marquette University in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. His academic excellence earned him a full scholarship to Northwestern University, where he completed his MBA in Finance and Accounting with academic distinction in 1967.

Following his education, Jim served his country as a supply officer in the United States Navy. From 1968 to 1971, he held the rank of lieutenant while stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. His time in the Navy reflected his deep sense of duty and commitment to service, values that would continue to guide him throughout his life.

After completing his military service, Jim embarked on a distinguished career in finance and accounting. In 1971 he joined Wachovia Corporation in Winston-Salem, NC, as a CPA. He retired in 2000 as senior vice president, finance and treasury. Over the years, he held several leadership roles including manager of corporate reporting and accounting policy as well as assistant treasurer. His professional accomplishments were marked by precision and a dedication to excellence.

Jim's life was enriched by his deep faith and active involvement at St. Paul Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. As a devoted member, elder, and church finance chairman for many years, he gave generously of his time and talents. Whether volunteering for church activities or offering quiet support behind the scenes, Jim's presence was steady and dependable.

Outside of work and service, Jim found joy in many pursuits. He served on the appropriations committee for United Way of Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools, and as the financial advisor to the Salvation Army and the Boys and Girls Club of Forsyth County. He was also a pianist and organist who found solace and expression through music. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling the world with his wife, Margaret, and spending time with family.

Jim is lovingly remembered by his wife, Margaret Shanks Tewes. Together they shared a life of love, companionship, and joy, a bond that brought light to all who knew them. He was a devoted father to Leighton Bradford Tewes and Kevin Scott Tewes; a caring father-in-law to Bridget Ann Tewes and Jodi Meadows Tewes; and a proud grandfather to Avaline, Olivia, Lia, and Pierson Tewes.

He also embraced Margaret's family as his own, including stepsons Kevin Shanks and Patrick Shanks; stepdaughters-in-law Amanda Shanks and Angela Shanks; step-grandson Carter Shanks; and step-granddaughters Ashley, Alyssa, and Amelia Byrd, all of whom were touched by his warmth and generosity.

Those who knew Jim will remember him for his kindness, calm demeanor, thoughtful nature, good humor, and unwavering positivity. He took time to listen deeply to others and made those around him feel valued. Jim never missed an opportunity to express love or pride for his family.

James Alvin Tewes leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and quiet strength. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory bring comfort to those who mourn his passing. A memorial service celebrating Jim's life will be held at St. Paul Presbyterian Church in Greensboro on Saturday, February 7, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, located at 2300 Old Chapman Street. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM prior to the service. The family requests that donations be made to AuthoraCare Hospice or St. Paul Presbyterian Church in lieu of flowers.

I got to know Jim casually during my time in the Cotrol department. He was  a master purveyor of all the numbers that were important to Wachovia. Numbers that filled all the required regulatory fiilings, numbers that presented Wachoia to sharholders in the annual report and other quarterly reports, plus a host of other public financial documents that he and his team produced. He was quietly and supremely confident in his work. In my interations with Jim,  he seemed almost shy in beginning a conversation, but there was a twinkle in his eye and a decisive crisp manner of speaking that immediately let you know he  commanded a vast knowledge of the important numbers and all the reasons why they were important. He was really good at his job and Wachovia was the better for his contributions. RIP.
