Ruth Hamilton Butler Mallard, 81, died Thursday, May 6, 2010 at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community. She was born June 12, 1928, in Jacksonville, Florida, to Francis Horatio Butler, Jr. and Marie Louise Hamilton Butler. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Noble Alfred Mallard; her brother, Frank H. Butler; and her sister, Mary Virginia Butler Muir Meredith. She is survived by her niece, Jean Muir Baer; and her great-nephew, Joey Baer, both of Tryon, NC. Mrs. Mallard attended Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1950. Upon graduation, she worked for a brief time in New York at Manufacturers Hanover Trust before accepting a position in the Personnel Department of Wachovia Bank and Trust Company in Winston-Salem. In 1990, after 37 years of service, she retired from Wachovia as an Assistant Vice President. Mrs. Mallard was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Her volunteer commitments included Crisis Control, the Emergency Department at North Carolina Baptist Hospital where she earned a 4,000-hours' service pin, and as a docent at Reynolda House Museum of American Art. In Celebration of the Life of Ruth Mallard, the Holy Eucharist will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Chapel, 520 Summit Street, at 3 p.m. Friday, May 14, 2010. The celebrants are the Reverend Dr. Fred Horton and the Reverend Tom Murray. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
