Bill Joyce

THOMASVILLE – Mr. Billy Fetzer (Bill) Joyce, 81, a resident of Burke Trail, died Sunday, December 19, 2010 at the Hospice Home At High Point. He was born in Martinsville, VA, February 18, 1929 the son of John David Joyce and Grace Lee Claybrook Joyce . He soon moved back to his native Ayersville Community in Rockingham County where his uncle and grandfather had adjoining farms and a dairy. He graduated from Stoneville High School and Brevard College before joining the Air Force. Upon completion of his duties, he returned to college at Elon where he graduated in 1957. He then joined Wachovia Bank & Trust in Burlington as a field representative with Sales Finance. He later was promoted to the Charlotte office until 1958 when he was promoted to Loan Manager in 1960. He moved to Winston Salem as Credit Manager and was elected Assistant Cashier in 1965. He was promoted to Assistant Vice-President in Thomasville and named Time Payment Manager in 1967. He later transferred to Greensboro where he was promoted to Manager of the Sales Finance Department and finished his career with Wachovia in High Point until his retirement in 1987. He was named “Boss of the Year” in 1983 by Credit Women International. He is a former Treasurer of the Thomasville Community Service Center and served as a member of the Board of Directors of Colonial Country Club. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Thomasville Merchant’s Association from 1967 to 1968 and was Chairman of Student Loans of Thomasville Community Foundation from 1965 to 1966. He was a member of the American Business Club, the Thomasville Lions Club, and a volunteer with Thomasville Meals On Wheels. He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church where he was a member of the R. L. Pope Bible Class and a former member of the church Administrative Board. One of his favorite pastimes was playing guitar with long time friends at area rest homes and churches. Bill enjoyed the adventures of life, taking trips to the beach and mountains, but was happiest to be with family at weekly Sunday night dinners. He was a grateful and thankful person who never forgot his roots or where he came from. He was a doer and a fixer and if he didn’t know how to fix something he would quickly figure it out. He was a believer in common sense and loved the simple things in life. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 58 years, Joann Schaefer Joyce of the home; a daughter, Deborah Kincaid and her husband Richard of Burlington; three sons, William David Joyce of Thomasville, Kenneth B. Joyce and his wife Lisa of Tampa, FL, and Marcus Joyce of Winston Salem; He is also survived by grandchildren, Kristen Bowman, Brad Bowman, Christopher Joyce, Justin Joyce and his wife Julie, Mackenzie Joyce, Madison Joyce, Heather Joyce, Meredith Kincaid Hopeck and her husband John, and Brooke Kincaid. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Ivan H. M. Peden and the Rev. Peggy A. Finch. Entombment will be at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will remain at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m.
