YORK CHARLOTTE ~ Lorna Crumpler Collins York Nov. 29, 1924 ~ May 26, 2011 Lorna Crumpler Collins York, 86, of the Carriage Club, died Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Carolinas Medical Center Pineville after a brief illness. Born November 29, 1924 in Danville, VA, Lorna was the daughter of the late Fred G. Crumpler Sr. and Ola Mae Styers Crumpler of Germanton, NC. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of ten years, Peter F. York; her daughter, Lynne Heidenreich Pacer of Charlotte (Tom); a brother, Fred G. Crumpler, Jr. (Marsha) of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Robert W. Thurbon, III (Kerilee) of Indian Trail; Blake Thurbon Anthony (Shannon) of Matthews; Reagan Moore Thurbon of Mineral Springs; two great-grandchildren: Cason Anthony and Emmalee Thurbon; Peter York's children: Jan and Jim; his grandchildren, Alison and Brad; daughter-in-law, Kim, and her children, Caitlin, Patrick, and Peter; niece, Andrea, and nephews, Freddie and Chris. She enjoyed a successful 35 year career in the financial services profession, initially as a credit analyst at Edward Howell Insurance and Finance Company in Greensboro and later through a 25 year affiliation with Wachovia Bank in Winston-Salem as a Vice President, personal banker, and lending officer. During that time, she also served as District, State, and ultimately National President of Credit Professionals International, a prestigious organization of career women affiliated with the credit services field, founded in 1930. In that position she served as a role model and mentor to colleagues throughout the country, and as a teacher and motivator in the many classes and seminars she led, enabling young people and first time seekers of credit to establish themselves on a personal financial basis. One of the joys of Lorna's life was time spent at her second home on High Rock Lake in Lexington, where she spent many years gardening, cooking, and laughing with good friends and her precious family. She was a local water sports celebrity, well-known for her acrobatic water skiing skills, among them teaching young people many years her junior the fine art of wakeboarding behind a 300 horsepower speedboat. The family especially wishes to thank our dear friend, Dee Atkins for her loving care and support of Lorna and Pete for many years, and particularly during the most recent challenging months. We also wish to thank our dear friend, Sarah Hulin of Denton, NC for her dedication and support that enabled Lynne to be with Lorna in the knowledge that other things near and dear to her were in good hands. The family will hold a private burial, on Tuesday, May 31 at Red Bank Baptist Church, Germanton NC, and will host a public Memorial Service to celebrate Lorna's life at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2011 in the auditorium of the Carriage Club, 5800 Old Providence Road, Charlotte. Refreshments will be served afterwards. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her honor to the charity of the donor's choice. J.B. Tallent Funeral Service is assisting her family. WS 61982 Lorna Crumpler Collins York

Lorna was an old family friend. My maternal grandfather was Nate Ashner. He and his second wife, Alice (Granny), were the Collins' neighbors for a while. I was very young at the time, but I remember visiting the Collins' home. Later, Lorna would help me get my first car loan through Wachovia. A few years later than that, in the late 1970s, I would go to work at Wachovia too as had my older sister, Rhonda Law, in the late 1960s!
