Quen Taylor, the voice of Wake Forest University sports for 20 years, died of acute myelogenous leukemia in 2001. Before he died he encouraged his friends and co-workers at First Citizens Bank , and his former Wachovia friends/co-workers, to donate blood.
A group of friends organized the Quen Taylor Blood Drive to honor his request and keep his memory alive. The first drive honoring Taylor was held in 2001.
The blood drive is the second-largest of the year for the Northwest North Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross, trailing only the annual blood drive at Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, …
Quote from Quen during his illness:
"You just don't know how good it feels when you are laying in a hospital and see that unit of blood coming through the door. Giving blood is the most wonderful thing you can do; eeryone can try. The receipient can't duplicate the gift they have received ---the gift of life." -

Quen was my branch manager in the late 1970s at Thruway Branch. He was a lot of fun. I remember his love of Wake Forest and Scott Batchelor's love of UNC-Chapel Hill, later to be my Alma Mater. They used to have a spirited rivalry!😊 I was so impressed that he was also a part-time DJ at a local AM radio station. Sorry to hear of his passing.
