Mr. Hoak died Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at Southminster Retirement Community. He was born May 21, 1929 in Pottsville, PA to the late William Hoak and Margaret Beverage Hoak. Mr. Hoak graduated with a B.S. from the University of Virginia on a full football scholarship. He was president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at UVA.
Mr. Hoak had an extensive 30 year career with Wachovia Bank and Trust. He retired in 1989 from Wachovia while serving at the Regional Vice President of the Southern Region. He served his community in various capacities over the years. These roles included Chairman of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Downtown Rotary Club President, Business Advisory Council Chairman of the UNCC College of Business Administration, Greater Charlotte Chamber of Commerce Chairman, United Way Campaign in Mecklenburg and Union Counties Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Chairman's Division, Arts and Science Council Major Gifts Division Chairman, Carolina Ambassadors Past President, Belmont Abbey College Chairman of the Board of Advisors, Charlotte Country Day School Chairman of the Board of Visitors, President of the Charlotte Merchants Association, Chairman of Crimestoppers, Dean of the North Carolina School of Banking, UNC-Chapel Hill and Executive VP and Secretary of the Charlotte Merchants Association. In addition he also served on 40 different Boards during his career. He was a member of Charlotte Country Club and Quail Hollow Country Club.
Mr. Hoak was preceded in death by Ellen McDowell Hoak. Surviving are his two sons, Robert Galen Hoak (Allyn) and their children, Margaret Pearson Hoak , Robert McDowell Hoak and William McDowell Hoak.He is also survived by his wife, Betsy Hoak; her two sons, Arthur Utley (Mary Beth) and their son, Jordan; and Bill Utley (Chris) and their children, Ben, Kyle and Sam; her daughter, Dru (Alton Herndon) and their children, Brad and Betsy.
A memorial service for Mr. Hoak will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday December 27 in the Great Hall at Southminster with the Rev. Douglas Aldridge officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Southminster. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Southminster Foundation 8919 Park Rd.
