IN MEMORY

Jean Beard

Jean S. Beard Aug. 29, 1921 ~ June 20, 2011 "It breaks our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone, For part of us went with you the day, God called you home." With her friends around her, Jean S. Beard of Oak Island, NC unexpectedly went to her Home with her Lord, on Monday, June 20, 2011. Jean was born August 29, 1921 in Winston-Salem, NC, where she attended school and worked until moving to Long Beach, NC. She is survived by stepson, Charles Beard, Jr. and wife, Mary of Ohio; brother, Ralph Simpson and wife, Marilyn of Greensboro; niece, Donna and husband, Ed Locke of Winston-Salem; cousin, Betty Jean Trotman of Winston-Salem; and several grand-nieces and nephews. Jean retired early after 40 yrs as Trust Officer for Wachovia in Winston-Salem, to move to Long Beach and take care of her ailing husband who preceded her in death. She will long be remembered in Oak Island for her avid bridge playing, easy humor and great cooking abilities. Hoping to extend her love of bridge, she started and taught a beginning bridge group for the Oak Island Senior Center and she will be sorely missed at the Tuesday Bridge Clubs she belonged to. She served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Oak Island Presbyterian Church for several years where she was a member. Until her health began to fail, she was heavily involved with the Senior Center and as a member of the Board; her talents were instrumental in obtaining funding and the purchase of the Oak Island Senior Center in Oak Island. Many little girls are playing with their Barbie dolls and the beautiful wardrobes that Jean so lovingly made even when her fingers became knotted and worn. Every holiday was a reason to decorate and celebrate and Jean enjoyed to the fullest having friends over and to see all her beautiful decorations was especially joyful. With love of all things Basset, special recognition should be given to her canine companion, "Sophia" and the great care provided by Lynn Clark of Oak Island that made Jean's quality of life immeasurable. At a later date, a Celebration of her Life will be announced and held at the Oak Island Presbyterian Church.
