Marjorie Jones

Mrs. Marjorie Elizabeth Petree Jones died April 25, 2014 at age 97. She was born July 13, 1916 to Claude Rufus and Sarah Norman Petree. She was an alumna of Salem College and a former employee of Wachovia Bank and Trust Company. She was married June 28, 1947, to Roy Ferdinand Jones, who operated a food brokerage business for over 40 years. Mrs. Jones left Wachovia and worked with Mr. Jones in his business. They enjoyed living on their farm and being active in their community. Mr. Jones died November 4, 1972.

Mrs. Jones is survived by one daughter, Sarah Norman Jones, and one sister, Nelda Petree McElrath, one sister-in-law, Lorene Dunn Petree, and six nieces and one nephew. She was preceded in death by one brother, C. Royce Petree, and two sisters, Nancy R. Petree, and Norma Petree Shaver of Carolina Beach, and one niece.

Mrs. Jones was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church and a Life Member of United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of The Lewisville Garden Club, a Life Member of the Garden Club of North Carolina, and a Master Flower Show Judge and President of Ikebana International. She was a member of the Old North State Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the James B. Gordon Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, where she served as Chapter President, 1976-1978, and the North Carolina Division Recording Secretary, 1978-1979, Treasurer, 1980-83, and President, 1983-1986. She had served as President of the Winston-Salem Chapter American Institute of Banking. She was a charter member of the Lewisville Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Democratic Women of Forsyth County. She was also a member of several local historical and art groups, and a licensed Real Estate Broker.

She was a descendant of several of the early settlers of this area, including George McKnight, Christopher Elrod, Philip Christoph Vogler, Jacob Conrad, Peter Pfaff, Joseph Jones, John Kraus and John Schemel. Her ancestors, Daniel, Isaac and Sophia Petree, were among the first members of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church. Her ancestors, George McKnight, Leonard Conrad, Peter Vogler, were among the founding members of Sharon United Methodist Church.

A graveside service will be held Monday, April 28, at 2:00 pm at Sharon United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to Sharon United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 5300 Sharon Church Road, Lewisville, North Carolina 27023.
