Sara Ann Thompson Cowen, age 77, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Monday, June 23, 2014. She was born October 8, 1936 in Birmingham, Alabama to AG and Sarah Lynn Thompson.
She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, J. Walter Cowen; her sister, Emily Worthington; her sister-in-law, Dora Alice Coleman; and many nieces and nephews.
After working for many years, Sara Ann retired from Wachovia Bank and was able to enjoy her many other interests. She loved spending time at Lake Norman, traveling with friends, playing tennis and golf, cooking and gardening. Also, she enjoyed her swimming group at the YWCA and her volunteer time with the Tar Heel Qualifier Tennis Tournaments and on the Welcome Desk at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at Salem Funerals and Cremations at the corner of Reynolda and Polo Roads at 11:00 am, on Thursday, June 26, 2014.
Her family and close friends wish to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation, and Hospice and Palliative CareCenter for their compassionate and loving care given to Sara Ann.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Forsyth Humane Society, 61 Miller Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27104; Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Sara was one of the nicest people I knew at Wachovia. She was Dalton Ruffin's secretary in the lobby when I joined the bank in 1969, and she always had a smile on her face. I'm so sorry to hear she passed away as she was one of my favorite Wachovians.
