Townsend, Jr. Winston-Salem Thatcher Lovejoy Townsend, Jr. April 11, 1932 - June 7, 2015 Thatcher Lovejoy Townsend, Jr. , passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 7, 2015 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home from complications from a stroke suffered during heart surgery a year ago. He was born on April 11, 1932 in Greensboro, NC to Thatcher L. Townsend, Sr. and Eileen Martin Townsend.
In his early life he was a devoted Boy Scout rising to the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he began a lifelong membership in Beta Theta Pi. He served in Europe in the Army Financial Corps and then received a Master's in Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He then joined the Management Training Program at Wachovia Bank in Winston-Salem, NC where he worked for 20 years in General Loan Administration and the International Department before leaving to work in private investments. His work in international business took him on extensive travels throughout the world, and western Canada became a second home for him. He was an early member and past President of the Winston-Salem Gallery of Contemporary Art, now known as the Southeast Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA), a role later shared by his daughter-in-law.
An enduring passion for him was his love of River Bluff Farms as it evolved from a weekend retreat to his primary residence for 35 years and ultimately to a close-knit neighborhood. At the end of his life, he took his greatest pleasure in following the lives of his two grandsons.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marian Faison Townsend; a daughter, Allyn P. Townsend of Winston-Salem, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, Thatcher L. Townsend III and Julia C. Townsend of Winston-Salem, NC; and two grandsons, J. Forrest Finch of Washington, DC and Thatcher L. Townsend IV of Winston-Salem, NC. A private burial will take place in his wife's family plot in Warsaw, NC at a later date. The family will receive friends at the home of his son and daughter-in-law at 3900 Camerille Farm Rd, Winston-Salem, NC on Thursday June 11 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Health Center and Greystone Cottage at Bermuda Village Retirement Community for the loving care they afforded Mr. Townsend for the last year and to the staff of the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for their care at the end of his life. Salem Funeral Home and Cremations is assisting the Townsend Family. Online condolences may be made through www.salemfh.com.
