Jeffrey Smith Coltrane, Jr. of Winston-Salem, NC died Monday, September 10, 2018. He was born September 19, 1927 in Winston-Salem to the late Jeffrey Smith Coltrane, Sr. and Sarah Nettie Hendricks Coltrane.

He was a graduate of Old Town High School and Brevard College where he was active in campus life. He was active in the Brevard College Alumni Association and served four terms on its board. In 1947 he was employed by Wachovia Bank and Trust Company in Winston-Salem and Greensboro until 1965, at which time he left Wachovia to move to Raleigh to work with the Office of the NC Commissioner of Banks Raleigh. He retired in 1989 as a Senior Trust Examiner and returned to Winston-Salem in 1998. He was a former member of both the Winston-Salem and Greensboro Jaycees. His interests included reading, he was a lover of books and classical music, and was keenly interested in history and genealogy. Mr. Coltrane was a member of a number or patriotic, historical and genealogical societies. These included the NC Genealogical Society in which he formerly served on the Board, a former member and Director of the Wake County Historical Society, a charter member of the Forsyth County Genealogical Society and Board member, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and Sons of the Revolution in the State of NC, serving on the Boards of both organizations. He was also a member of the Society of Colonial Wars, the St. Andrews Society of NC, former treasurer of the Clan Moffat Society, and a member of the Clan Stewart Society. He enjoyed traveling and made three trips to Europe. He especially enjoyed visiting historic places, his favorite being Colonial Williamsburg. After retirement, he volunteered many hours in the NC Museum of History and the State Capitol in Raleigh, as well as the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was a lifelong Methodist and member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by parents and his three sisters, Virginia Mock, Helen Coltrane, and Sarah Coltrane, and his two brothers, William Coltrane and Robert Coltrane. He is survived by his sister Emma Philpott (and her husband, Harry), as well as numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, great- nieces, nephews, great-great nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Salem Funeral Home, Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem on Tuesday September 25, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 26, 2:00 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. 5th Street, Winston-Salem, and interment following at Forsyth Memorial Park.
