Roy Phillips

Garret E. (Roy) Phillips Jr., 94 died unexpectedly on February 2, 2021 at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living. He was born September 25, 1926 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina the son of  Garret E ( Roy) Sr.. and Mary Lander Phillips. Roy graduated from Atkins High School Class of 1943. Following graduation he lived in New York  before entering the United States Army.  During his military career he served  during World War II and in Enintok Station at Guam, Saipan, Leyte and Manila.

After the war he attended Winston-Salem Teachers College “WSSU” Class of 1950. Roy began his career in banking with Mechanics and Farmers Bank in Durham, NC. He later returned to Winston-Salem employed by Wachovia Bank and Trust Company, until  his retirement after 39  years of service in 1990. Roy met his wife Barbara Kinard, while they both  were employed at the bank. To this union was born one daughter, Eleanor Emmalene.

Roy was a Gold Star member of 77 years at First Baptist Church-Highland Avenue Winston-Salem, NC. A fraternal brother of Omega Psi Phi for 74 years. In the community he was very active having served on the  Benedicts and Board member of Holland Homes (W-SHA), YMCA. Salvation Army, Salvation Boys Club, Bethlehem Center, Chaildrens Center, Hospice of Winston-Salem, Friends of the WSSU Library.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife Dr. Barbara K. Phillips, a e brother George M. Phillips Sr. and sister Valerie Phillips.

Surviving are his daughter, Eleanor E. Phipps and grandson Garret B. Phipps, affectionately called “Lil Garret; sisters-in-law Helen P. Phillips, Nancy G. Armstrong; nieces, Mary Helen Phillips Evans(Robert), Tammy Williams NcNair; nephews, George M. Phillips Jr.(Dorinda), Gregory Phillips (Faye), Charles III ”Chad”  Armstrong (Ashely); a loving circle of great great nieces and nephews; and the Phillips Family Reunion which were very near and dear to his heart.

A public viewing will be held Sunday February 7, 2021 from 12pm-6pm, at Hooper Funeral Home. Funeral services will be private.  A special thank you to Brighton Gardens and Trellis Supportive care for a job well done.
