Eugene (Gene) Hardin

 

Eugene Brooks Hardin, Jr. retired banker, died May 9, 2014 in Raleigh, at the age of 83. He was born in Wilmington, NC, the son and only child of Eugene B. Hardin and Roberta Sterling Hardin.

After serving in the Navy, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned his degree in Business Administration. He then served in the Air Force before going to work at Wachovia Bank.

 

In 1958 he married Olivia Cary Lynch, also a native of Wilmington. They have two children. Mr. Hardin held positions in Wilmington and Burlington before being appointed Office Executive for Raleigh. He assumed responsibility for the bank’s Central Region in 1974 and was elected Regional Vice President in 1979.

While devoting a great part of his life to Wachovia, he also focused a tremendous amount of his energies toward his church and his community. During his time in Raleigh, he has served as past chairman of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority as well as past chairman for the Raleigh Civic Center Authority, and a past officer of the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce. He also served as past chairman of the Board of Trustees of St. Mary’s College and on the Board of Trustees for Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. He also served as a director for the Rex Hospital Foundation, Inc.

Mr. Hardin was an active member of Christ Church, Raleigh and served three times on the vestry.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years as well as a son, John Haywood Hardin and his wife Elise, of Greenville, SC; a daughter Olivia Hardin Pettifer and her husband Andrew of Raleigh; a granddaughter, Helen Olivia Hardin; and a grandson, Alexander James Pettifer.
