Mary Love

Mary Alice Love passed away Dec. 30, 2023 at the age of 94. She was a loving and caring individual who dedicated her life to serving others.
Mary grew up in a large and loving family. Her grandparents owned a farm out of Sidney, Ohio. She cherished her memories of spending Christmas and summers on the farm, particularly the time she spent with her Aunties who ran the farm. Mary's generous spirit extended beyond her family, as she actively volunteered in church activities, including the United Methodist Women and Respite Care at Centenary United Methodist Church. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels, and worked in the gift shop at Arbor Acres.
Mary had a passion for travel and explored every continent except Antarctica. She embarked on these adventueres with family and friends, participating in mission trips, tour groups, and even driving across the country after retirement.
Mary was fascinated by different cultures and loved learning how others lived their lives.
In addition to her love for travel, Mary had a deep affection for animals. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether it was in the mountains, camping, or tending to her garden. Mary had a sharp mind and enjoyed challenging herself with puzzles, playing bridge, and participating in book clubs.
Mary is survived by her children Susan, Mark and ohn; grandchildren Tara, Ashley, Alice, Kevin, Gary and Heidi; and 3 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Love, and her parents and brother.
Mary's educational journey included earning a B.A. in mathematics.
Mary met Sam in college. They married a few years after her graduation. Mary and Sam lived in Philadelphia as he finished his PhD then they moved to Boston while he completed post graduate work. In 1955 they moved to Winston-Salem where Sam joined the faculty at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in their Microbiology Department.
Throughout her life, Mary pursued various career paths. She taugh math, and worked as a Calculator with GE and Westinghouse. She also served as a school docent at Old Salem, and worked in the Bond Department at Wachovia Bank.
A memorial service to celebrate Mary's life will be held Friday, Jan. 26, 2024 at 2pm at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Following the service, a reception will be held at Arbor Acres at 3:30pm
