IN MEMORY

Mebane Davis

  April 18, 1940 - August 5, 2024

Allen Mebane Davis, Senior, always known as Meb, was born in Burlington, NC to Paul and Margaret Davis. The family later moved to Winston-Salem where he grew up with his brothers and earned his Eagle Scout award. He graduated from RJ Reynolds High School and went on to continue his education at UNC-Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the Navy ROTC and Delta Sigma Pi fraternity. Upon graduation, he was commissioned into the United States Navy as an officer. He served aboard the USS Fort Mandan during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, he accepted a position with Wachovia Bank and Trust. He retired from Wachovia as a Sr. Vice President after 37 years. While in college, Meb met his perfect match, a co-ed at UNC-Greensboro (WC). He and Diana married after his graduation from UNC. They were married 62 years and had two children. Meb cherished his family. They built a lifetime of memories together boating and fishing at the Carolina coast, playing on the beach, exploring the NC mountains, and eating great meals regardless of the location. Meb also enjoyed watching a good NASCAR race, golfing with his buddies in the Fearsome Foursome, and grilling. Meb’s love for his Tar Heels came in a close second behind his love for his family. Decked out in Carolina blue, you could always find Meb on Saturdays cheering in the stands or at home during football and basketball seasons. He rooted his team to several championships by sheer will alone. He is predeceased by his parents, brother Kent Davis, and sister-in-law Kay Underwood Lisk. He is survived by his wife Diana, his children Allison Chrisco (Gerald) of Advance and Allen M. Davis, Jr. (Wendy) of Raleigh, and grandson Ward Davis of Raleigh. He is also survived by his identical twin brother, Michael Davis (Sarah) of Camden, SC, and sister-in-law Kate Davis of Chicago, IL, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Rev. Clyde Godwin officiating. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the staff at both Batangas Gardens in Bermuda Village and Trellis for their kind and compassionate care for Dad over the past several months. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Rd., Suite 300, Jacksonville, NC 32256.

I worked with Meb on a number of projects over the years and he was also a neighbor on Dover Drive. His quiet, measured demeanor and insightful way of problem solving was always impressed me. And even though the Wachovia blue was a shade off from Carolina blue, Meb was a true, blue Wachovian. Rest in Peace.

Jack and I send heartfelt condolences to Diana and family. I remember Meb as a true southern gentleman and good friend who was a positive influence in any situation. We worked together during my 11 years with Wachovia in Winston-Salem and I admired the way he approached his responsibilities with an analytical mind, confidence, and a good sense of humor.  Mostly, I appreciate the warm welcome he and Diana extended to us, the two strangers from Atlanta. I'd like to think he'll still have access to golf, UNC football, and NC BBQ in his new home.

Meb and I worked together in Operations for many years.

I admired his skills with people and the many tasks under his leadership.

Plus he was fun to be with when we had dinner and talked shop.

Meb was nice to me even though I was a graduate of Penn State!
