CANTER WINSTON-SALEM James "Jim" Alton Canter April 13, 1930-Feb. 10, 2015 James "Jim" Alton Canter died peacefully on February 10, 2015 in Winston-Salem, NC at the age of 84. Jim is survived by his wife, Golda Davis Canter; children, Susan Canter Boyles and Stephen Alton Canter, son-in-law Robert Strickland Boyles, Jr; Golda's children June King, Ron Davis, Denise Lineberry, and Meg Eakes; siblings, Patty Canter Broyhill, Richard Kenneth Canter, and Ronald Gray Canter; and grandchildren Robert Strickland Boyles, III, James Stephen Boyles, Rhegan Zavala, and Averi Zavala.

Jim was born on April 13, 1930 in Wilkes County, NC to Hubert Alton Canter and Edith Elledge Canter and was raised by his stepmother Gozeal McNeil Canter for many years. He graduated from Millers Creek High School in 1948 as valedictorian. He graduated from the University of Virginia with a BS in Commerce on an ROTC scholarship, served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict, and received his Master of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His career included many years with Wachovia Bank and the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System. He served on the board of the State Employees Credit Union and volunteered at Crisis Control Ministry and the Forsyth County Public Library. He was a generous, witty man who loved his family and friends. He was an active member of Ardmore Baptist Church and the Ardmore Men's Club.

A memorial is scheduled for 3:00p.m. on Saturday, February 14 at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro, NC preceded by visitation from 1:30p.m. - 2:45p.m. Another memorial service will be held at Ardmore Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC on Sunday, February 15 at 5:00p.m. followed by visitation. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jim's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home at 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or the Ardmore Baptist Church Building Fund at 501 Miller Street Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

I remember Jim well and enjoyed working with him.

His dedication to his work was exemplory and he was fun to be around..

One of the "good guys".
