I worked closely with Joe for the last fifteen years at Wachovia and we had stayed close friends for the last twenty years since retirement. Dave's description of Joe was perfect; 'He was always there to help anyone who needed it'. He was well known all across Wachovia as someone who could provide information, help and advice. He got very involved as we merged with banks in GA, SC, VA and FL, and we had to merge the Propery Management functions of those banks. He traveled often to other distant states to oversee major projects in New York, Dallas and Chicago; and then went back to to all of them to renovate, expand and, in the case of NY, to relocate our operations from Rockefeller Center to Carnegie Tower. In addition he and his project managers oversaw construction of from 6-12 new branches per year in NC.
Joe was dependable, friendly and courteous, but could become hard-nosed when necessary, which is often the case with construction projects. When he stepped onto the job site he instantly had everyone's attention. He was one of the key people who helped make Wachovia successful.
I traveled many a mile with Joe over the years and learned much from him. We became friends in 1985 when I first met him, and had remained close friends since then. I will miss that friendship.
