However, Tony came out of retirement in 1995 to serve as Chief Financial Officer of Cone Mills for a few years before officially retiring for good.  Tony was quick with a NY Times crossword puzzle, always cheered for his UNC Tarheels and was a passionate supporter and past Board Member of Old Salem Museum and Gardens.

I visited Tony at Trellis Hospice last week. He was alert and communicated well. We relived the good old days at Wachovia and all our friends. I was shocked to learn about his death. Someone told me earlier that he had Lung Cancer and Leukemia, Not sure if that is correct.Tony was telling me what he planned to do when he left Hospice.

He was a great friend and I miss him.

Tony was one of the "great gentlemen" of Wachovia.

I saw Dave Cotterill's note regarding his recent visit with Tony and suggesting we call if we wished to do so. I tried several times, as late as Friday, and I feared the worst. I have not seen Tony since I left Wachovia in 1974. He and Dal Gwynn were good friends and Dal and I had beer teammates and fraternity brothers at Virginia. We three would play golf together and, of course, saw each other frequently at work. I was so impressed, but not surprised, of his many achievements in the intervening years. In addition to being a super nice person, he was exceptionally bright.
I send my sincerest condolences to his family. God's blessings.

I was fortunate to have a few interactions with Tony and agree with the previous comments how pleasant a person Tony was to work with. I think it was Tony that told me the story of when he and another Wachovian were in Egypt on business when they decided to get up in the middle of the night and climb to the top of one of the pyramids to watch the stars give way to the morning sun.Tony was a stellar Wachovian.

I am saddened to hear of Tony's passing. He was named CFO shortly after I transferred to the Financial Division from First Atlanta, so I had the pleasure of working with him for a couple of years. I admired the wit, insight, and innovation he brought to his leadership style. He and his wife were charming and gracious people who personified the Wachovia culture. He will be missed.
